NewsBrands Ireland launch Journalism Awards 2018 sponsored by National Lottery

The National Lottery has announced it is to once again sponsor the NewsBrands Ireland annual Journalism Awards which will take place in Dublin’s Mansion House on November 15th 2018.

The 2018 Journalism Awards will feature a total of 26 categories spanning all areas and disciplines of modern journalism including news, analysis, reporting, opinion, features, business, investigative journalism, politics, sport, crime, digital excellence, and more.

This year, a new ‘Campaign of the Year’ category has been added to the Awards which will showcase the valuable role newspapers play in affecting positive change in society through the use of powerful words and reporting.

Award-winning entrepreneur Jerry Kennelly has been announced as the new Chair of the Judging Panel. He will preside over an independent judging panel who will be tasked with whittling the thousands of entries into 26 overall winners and choosing the annual Journalist of the Year.

Steeped in newspapers from an early age, Jerry Kennelly learned his craft in his family’s Tralee based news and publishing business, Kerry’s Eye. By 1981, he had founded Newsfax, an independent news and picture agency. He then ventured into international entrepreneurial businesses including Stockbyte and Stockdisc which were acquired by Getty Images in 2006. In 2011, Jerry established Tweak, a global design technology business.

The 2018 judging panel will be made up of independent figures from inside and outside the newspaper industry, all chosen for their integrity and commitment to the highest journalistic standards.

Commenting at the launch of this year’s Journalism Awards, Vincent Crowley, Chairman of NewsBrands Ireland said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jerry Kennelly as our new Judging Panel Chairman. He brings with him a knowledge and passion for journalism which will be of considerable value to the Awards judging process.

“The Journalism Awards’ new Campaign of the Year category will showcase how Irish newspapers, through their reporting and campaigns, contribute positively to civic life and the public good. Public interest journalism campaigns hold the powerful accountable, increase transparency and strengthen democracy, as well as providing an important platform for communities to rally around causes. Good luck to all of this year’s entrants.”

Dermot Griffin, Chief Executive of the National Lottery, said: The National Lottery is honoured to continue to support these awards which celebrate the very best in Irish journalism. We are lucky in Ireland to have journalists who perform a vital public service through ground-breaking reporting, shining a light on matters of public interest.

“Integrity and responsibility are core values to the National Lottery and therefore supporting the NewsBrands Awards is an appropriate fit as they also recognise the importance of these values to the benefit of society.”

Jerry Kennelly, the new Chair of the Judging panel, said: Never before has brave journalism been so important to produce the work that challenges us all and reveals the damage caused by decades of short-term thinking which has impacted so negatively on Irish society. Rewarding and celebrating the best work in journalism is ensuring that the most courageous and pioneering will continue to shine a light where it is needed.”

The eligibility period for this year’s NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards is from July 1st 2017 to June 30th 2018. Entries will open in July 2018.
