< Responsible Play

Our commitment to our players

Playing on the National Lottery site should be safe and enjoyable all our players.

How we keep our players safe

Built in features onsite mean all our players are subjected to the same player protection measures, which are safer by design. We’ve also offer self-service features that put the player in control.

Responsible game development

All games are risk assessed before development to avoid games that are quick to play and encourage repeat play. They are subject to a stringent approval process, and we ensure that our advertising strategies do not target anyone under 18. Marketing of all lottery games must comply with all codes of practice and The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland.

Default maximum spend limits

When players open an account with us they will have Spend Limits set by default, which define maximum amounts that they can spend on Lottery products for given periods. These are set to €75 per day, €300 per week, and €900 per month.

Player adjustable spend limits

Should they need to, they can customise their Spend Limits. However, they can only set them to amounts lower than the preset values, not higher.

Take a break

Players can choose to take a break from your National Lottery account for minimum of one month up to 5 years. If they decide to do this, their account will be closed and inaccessible for the period they select. Additionally, we will not send them any messages, or marketing notifications.

Close account

Should they wish to players can close their account, and any outstanding balance is returned to them.

Automated duplicate account detection and account suspension

During registration, any new account being created is checked against existing ones to make sure there aren’t multiple accounts for one person, or that a person who has been either suspended or has self-excluded can not create a new account to play with.

Mandatory ID Verification

It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to open an account or to play National Lottery Online. All new users are required to agree to our Terms and Conditions and click a separate check box confirming they are at least 18 years of age at the time of account creation. At the National Lottery, we recognise that the internet is readily available in many homes and because of this, we must work together with parents to prevent children from underage gaming.

Tips for helping to protect minors:

  • Keep your username and password out of reach of children
  • Be sure to always log out of your online account when it is not in use
  • Limit the amount of time your children spend online
  • Consider installing internet filter software such as NetNanny, which allows you to control and block access to gambling websites
