Cork retailer overjoyed that a member of an ‘incredibly deserving community’ could have won Saturday’s €6.9 million Lotto jackpot

Cork Retailer Overjoyed a Deserving Community Member Won Lotto Jackpot

Winning ticketholder makes contact to claim latest Lotto jackpot prize

The National Lottery has this morning confirmed that the winning ticket for last Saturday’s Lotto jackpot worth €6,933,904 was sold at a family owned service station in Togher on the outskirts of Cork City. The winning location was Murphy’s Circle K service station on Vicar’s Road in Togher on the southside of Cork City.

As socially distanced celebrations are set to begin in the Cork store today, the National Lottery also confirmed that the winning ticketholder who scooped the €6.9 million Lotto jackpot on Saturday night made contact late on Monday evening and arrangements are now being made for their prize to be paid.

Owner of the winning store, Noel Murphy established the business on Vicar’s Road in Togher in 1995 and he heralded the win as a tremendous boost to a community which has strongly come together during the current pandemic.

“I have been absolutely bursting to share this amazing news but I have had to keep it to myself since yesterday evening. Anybody who knows the area surrounding Togher will know what a fantastic community we have here. Especially over the last number of months, we have been reminded of that great community spirit that we have and knowing that one of these people has won almost €7 million is truly heart-warming. I have absolutely no idea who the winner is, whether it is a syndicate or a lucky single winner. Whoever it is, we wish them all the best of luck with their new found fortune and I hope they enjoy it,” he said.

The joyous Cork businessman said that he had some suspicions that his store may have been the lucky selling agent for the life-changing €6.9 million prize following local rumours but didn’t allow himself to even dream about the win until he received official notification from the National Lottery.

“Funnily enough, there were rumours swirling around the area on Sunday that we sold the winning jackpot ticket but I assured everybody that I would be the first to know, apart from the winner of course! Now that the win is confirmed, we’re going to have a memorable day of celebrations in-store with our staff and customers, from two metres of course! I am lucky to have some of the hardest working staff you could hope for so once restrictions are lifted and our lives return to some form of normality, the entire store will be enjoying a night out on me to celebrate the win,” he added.

This latest Lotto win is the 6th jackpot win this year with over €30 million won in jackpot prizes alone. In 2020, over €67 million has been won in prizes in the Lotto game which includes 11 new millionaires which have been created in the Lotto and Lotto Plus games.

Since the Lotto game began in 1985, there have been 175 jackpot winners from Cork with jackpot prizes totalling over €266 million.

Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on all National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes in the areas of sport, youth, health, welfare, education, arts, heritage and the Irish Language. In total more than €5.6 Billion has been raised for Good Causes since the National Lottery was established 33 years ago. In 2019 alone, €252 million was raised for local Good Causes in communities across Ireland.
