 Good Cause Funding in 2016

The National Lottery would like to thank all its players for making 2016 another highly successful year for Good Cause projects across Ireland.

Over €200 million was generated in 2016, bringing the total amount raised since the establishment of the National Lottery to over €5 billion. For almost 30 years, this fund has been allocated to support worthwhile causes and local community projects across the country.

The National Lottery funds projects in Youth, Sports, Recreation, Amenities, Health, Welfare, Arts, Culture, National Heritage and the Irish Language. Funds raised by the National Lottery are transferred to the Exchequer and are used to part-finance expenditure by various Government Departments on projects in these categories.

Commenting on the release of the latest Good Causes figures, Dermot Griffin, Chief Executive of the National Lottery said:“2016 has been an incredibly positive year for the National Lottery. With an increase in sales of over 10% on this time last year, we are now the fastest growing Lottery in Europe. This year on average, over €4 million was raised by the National Lottery every week for Good Causes. We are now delighted to confirm that our players have contributed in excess of €200 million towards Good Causes in 2016.”

“It has been a great year for our players too”, said Griffin. “Our biggest win of the year was won by a syndicate of friends who scooped the incredible €66 million EuroMillions jackpot prize in February. And who can forget our Dublin Bus syndicate from last July who arrived at Lottery HQ on Abbey Street on a double decker bus to collect their EuroMillions jackpot of almost €24 million. With over €200 million raised this year to date for Good Causes, we would like to thank all of our player across the country who have made it all possible”.
