Meath Women’s Refuge and Support Services operating 24 hours a day over the Christmas period

An inspiring non-profit organisation which assists women affected by domestic violence and abuse will operate 24 hours a day over the Christmas period.

Meath Women’s Refuge and Support Services, which was named National Lottery Good Cause of the Year 2023, has said the festive period can be a very tough time for many families experiencing domestic abuse.

“Every year we see a surge in calls for help over December and January”, said Frances Haworth, Fundraising and Communications Manager, Meath Women’s Refuge & Support Services. “It can be a really difficult time of year for families where there is violence or abuse at home and the feelings of isolation which are often heightened during the Christmas period with schools closed, services limited and access to your support network curtailed. Our helpline and refuge is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so any woman in Meath that needs help can contact us at 1800 464646. Donations are a vital part of keeping our services going for the women who need us.”

The organisation was recently honoured for their work by the National Lottery Good Causes Awards, where they won a generous €35,000 to support their mission.

“We were over the moon to be named National Lottery Good Cause of the Year 2023, and the excitement hasn’t gone away! It was such a special night that we’ll never forget and it's a testament to all the hard work our staff and volunteers do. We’re will invest part of the money into our counselling services for abuse victims and the rest will be spread across enhancing our other services”, she added.

The organisation is continuing their annual Christmas Appeal, seeking support for their front-line work with women and families experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

While Meath Women’s Refuge & Support Services receives State funding, the money raised this Christmas will contribute to paying for heating, electricity and maintenance of the refuge building, as well as additional supports like vouchers for food, new toys for children, food for refuge, counselling for women and play and music therapy for children. All information on how to donate and support the appeal is available on their website (www.dvservicesmeath.ie).

The National Lottery is delighted to stand beside such a noble cause, who are dedicated to creating safer communities for all.

Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on all National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes in the areas of sport, youth, health, welfare, education, arts, heritage, and the Irish Language. In total more than €6 Billion has been raised for Good Causes since the National Lottery was established 36 years ago. In 2022 alone, €259.5 Million was raised for local Good Causes in communities across Ireland.
