FAQs
How does the prize allocation work for a ‘Will Be Won’ draw?
If the Lotto jackpot is won outright where a player(s) matches all six numbers in the Lotto draw, they will become Ireland’s largest ever Lotto jackpot winner and claim the €19.06 million jackpot.
As the jackpot is already capped, what happens the excess prize funding in this special draw?
Due to the cap, the additional funds which would usually be added to the jackpot will continue to flow-down to the next prize tier at which there is a winner. This has happened in each of the draws since the cap came into effect on Saturday 2nd October 2021.
What if there is no outright jackpot winner? Could the jackpot prize fund exceed the €19.06 million cap?
If the ‘will be won’ Lotto jackpot is not won outright, the full value of the jackpot prize will flow down to the winner(s) of the next winning prize tier.
For example, if there are no players who match 6 numbers in the draw but there are winners at the Match 5+Bonus prize tier, they will win the €19.06 million jackpot as well as the additional funds that would usually go to the jackpot.
Why is the National Lottery introducing a ‘Will Be Won’ draw now?
The current Lotto jackpot rollover is unprecedented in the history of the game and has resulted in there being no Lotto jackpot winner in the game since 5th June 2021. The approved game changes will bring this roll to a celebratory end and ensure that a player(s) can enjoy this life-changing prize by a guaranteed date.
Do these game changes means that we will not see a Lotto jackpot roll for as long in future?
In the future, should the Lotto exceed the current jackpot cap of €19.06 million in any given draw, that amount will become the new Lotto jackpot cap and any excess which would usually be added to the jackpot would flow down to the next prize tier at which there is a winner. Under the new Lotto game rules, the Lotto jackpot will remain capped for a maximum of five draws and if there is no outright jackpot winner on the fifth draw at cap, the entire jackpot fund flows down to the next winning prize tier.
Why was the Lotto jackpot capped in the first place?
It is common practise for lottery jackpots around the world to be capped to ensure the integrity of the game. For context, the current jackpot is now capped at €19 million and is now above the base level jackpot for the EuroMillions game and in this case, it’s guaranteed to be won by somebody in Ireland.
The jackpot has been capped for three months now. Where has the additional prize money gone during this time?
Since the Lotto jackpot cap came into effect on 2nd October, the additional funds that would usually be added to the jackpot have instead flowed down to the next winning prize tier. For example, in Wednesday night’s (12th January) Lotto draw, there were three players at the Match 5+Bonus prize tier who won €253,314 each while in Saturday night’s (8th January) Lotto draw, we saw 24 players win €33,181 each after matching five numbers.
Because of the jackpot cap, the flow down of prizes has given more players the opportunity to win even bigger prizes at lower prize tiers.
Since the jackpot cap came into effect on Saturday 2nd October, approximately €23.9 million in additional prizes has flowed down to lower prize tiers.
