The Cavan Centre
Youth Winner

The Cavan Centre is the winner of the Youth Award for its long-standing support of young people from inner-city Dublin. Since 1977, the Centre has worked with over 127,000 young people and families, offering a safe place to take part in outdoor activities, build confidence, and make positive choices.
Located in Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, the Centre mainly supports people from Dublin North Inner City and surrounding areas. Many of those who attend face serious challenges, including poverty, low school attendance, exposure to crime, homelessness, and social isolation. The Centre also works with young migrants, LGBTQI+ youth, young carers, and those with additional needs.
The Centre uses outdoor education and hands-on learning to help young people develop life skills and improve their wellbeing. Activities include kayaking, hiking, team games, and creative workshops. These experiences give young people a break from their daily environment and help them build trust, independence, and friendships.
Part-funding from the National Lottery has helped the Centre reach more people, including families living in emergency accommodation. These short stays give families space to cook, relax, and spend time together in a peaceful setting. Feedback from participants often highlights how much these breaks mean to them, with many describing the Centre as a place where they feel safe and cared for.
The Centre also trains youth workers and volunteers, helping to build skills and support networks in the communities it serves. Its work is practical, consistent, and focused on giving people the tools they need to improve their lives.
The National Lottery Good Causes Awards is proud to recognise The Cavan Centre CLG for its decades of service and its continued commitment to helping young people grow, connect, and find their way forward.
