Irish Whale & Dolphin Group, Clare

Heritage Winner

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) has been awarded the Good Causes Heritage Award for its volunteers’ exceptional contribution to marine conservation and community engagement over more than three decades. Founded in 1990, IWDG is Ireland’s leading cetacean charity, dedicated to the protection, research, and welfare of whales, dolphins, and porpoises in Irish waters.

One of its most vital initiatives is the Live Stranding Response Program, which addresses the growing number of live strandings along Ireland’s coastline. With no official agency responsible for these incidents, IWDG has stepped in to fill this critical gap, coordinating emergency responses, training volunteers, and ensuring stranded animals receive expert care and, where possible, a second chance at life.

Part-funding from the National Lottery has enabled IWDG to expand its volunteer network, deliver hands-on training workshops, and enhance its rescue infrastructure. These efforts have led to more humane and effective interventions, improved data collection for scientific research, and stronger collaboration with local communities, emergency services, and coastal organisations.

Beyond rescue work, IWDG plays a key role in public education and environmental advocacy. Through outreach programmes, citizen science initiatives, and coastal awareness campaigns, the organisation fosters a deeper understanding of marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting Ireland’s rich natural heritage. Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcomed, creating an inclusive and passionate community of conservation advocates.

The National Lottery Good Causes Awards is proud to honour the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group for its enduring dedication to Ireland’s marine life and its inspiring legacy of conservation and community action.
