Sport Winner

Dragon Boat Club Ballina are winners of the Good Causes Sport Award 2025 for their innovative approach to well-being, fostering community through sport and expanding beyond sporting activities. Their efforts have profoundly impacted members' health and connectedness, as well as fostering inclusivity and a heartfelt community spirit.

Founded in 2023, this volunteer-led group supports individuals affected by serious health challenges, as well as their families and supporters, by fostering physical activity, emotional resilience, and community spirit. Dragon boating is a team water sport that involves paddling in long, narrow boats, traditionally decorated with dragon heads and tails. It promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and mental wellbeing, making it especially powerful for those affect by illness or seeking connection through sport.

Ballina Dragons now has over 100 members and offers a wide range of activities beyond dragon boating, including Pilates, exercise sessions, storytelling, choir singing, and participation in festivals. The club creates a welcoming space where people from all walks of life can come together, build confidence, and find joy in shared experiences.

Part-funding from the National Lottery enabled the club to purchase a second dragon boat, expanding access and deepening its impact. This funding has helped bring more people onto the water, strengthen local partnerships, and inspire new initiatives, including a regatta race which unites paddlers and volunteers from across the island of Ireland in celebration of community and connection.

The National Lottery Good Causes Awards is proud to honour Ballina Dragon Boat Club for its inspiring work in promoting health, healing, and togetherness through sport and sustainability.
