Founded in 1971, Ratoath Athletic Club has always worked to instil an ethos of participation in athletics, especially amongst the young people of the County Meath town. With over 460 active members from 4 year olds to Seniors, Ratoath is one of Ireland’s largest athletic clubs, and is still growing in line with the town’s increasing population.
The club is very proud of its members and has achieved great success over the years. They have many high-level athletes competing and winning in the Meath, Leinster, All Ireland, and European competition circuits. Funds raised by Lottery players has helped Ratoath AC develop dedicated facilities that enables them to tailor training and development programmes for their star athletes but also develop innovative approaches to encourage all members from Young Athletics, Fit 4 Youth and Fit for Life groups, and to encourage Ratoath residents to become as active as they can be and live longer, healthier lives.
National Lottery funding helped Ratoath AC supplement the facilities they had in place, with a 2000m blue tartan area that caters for a range of athletics events such as 80m sprint/hurdles, long jump, high jump, a throwing area and a strength and conditioning section. The impact of this has been considerable, as an all weather training facility means certainty for participants and proper planning for training schedules. It lets the club truly expand its sports offering and in partnership with the local school students can fully assess their interest in a wider range of sports
These facilities will clearly help the club build on its recent outstanding success at Meath, Leinster, and All-Ireland levels. However, one of the spin-off benefits the club envisages is increased participation of the wider Ratoath Community. This new ‘tartan’ area guarantees provision of dedicated facilities throughout the year. They intend to work with many different local clubs and organisations to provide encouragement and coaching in a safe environment. This will include the men’s & women’s shed, facilities for their disabled athletes, some based in the local independent living centre and persons with intellectual disabilities.
Ratoath Athletics Club’s future is bright with such community spirit, and we're proud to support them along their journey.
