The National Lottery’s first ever Sweepstakes race took place on 27 June 2010, at the Curragh racecourse.
Trevor Cawley from Sligo had no intention of saying nay when his horse Invincible Ash won the National Lottery’s first ever Sweepstakes race in June 2010 at the Curragh racecourse. It meant a first place prize of €1 million. His heart was pounding, his eyes were wide with excitement… but enough about the horse. Each of the twenty five Sweepstakes Winners taking part were equally excited. Some jumping was seen to happen.Trevor came out the clear winner, but a very impressive second place went to Denis Crowe from New Ross in Wexford with €500,000. In third place was Anne Nelson from Crumlin in Dublin, taking home €250,000, and Martin McDonnell of Drogheda won a very well placed €100,000. In all there were 25 runners, and all won at least €10,000. Not bad for a day at the races, and the VIP Weekend at the K Club in Straffan wasn’t to be snorted at either. We’re reliably informed that the luncheon for friends and family of the winners, at the National Lottery Pavilion in the Curragh Racecourse, was a rather tasty finisher. All in all, well worth the flutter.
